No prizes for guessing the “client” for this little personal website!
- Custom design. I wanted to constrain the line length of the text to something that made for comfortable reading, but to place the “text box” in a setting that was a little more dramatic and interesting than a plain, mono-coloured background. On larger screens, the background is filled by randomly-displayed photographs of the striking Scottish Parliament building, which shrink or stretch to fill the screen area. I positioned the text box to the left to make a more dynamic composition than dropping it dead centre; and the box has some transparency, allowing the photograph below to shine through a little.
- Responsive layout. The web page layout is fully responsive; it automatically adjusts and adapts to any device screen size, be it a desktop computer, a laptop, a tablet, or a mobile phone. On the smallest screens, the background photo is sacrificed altogether.
- Content and architecture. In terms of content, this is just a little biography site that only needs one page. But I also built it as a testing ground for a few development techniques, so there are some secondary pages accessed through the menu, such as this page which deals with some of the technicalities. Organised into a handful of sections, the structure is nearly as simple as it gets.
- Banner and monogram. I designed a different header treatment for large and small screens: a full-name banner occupying the whole width of the text box on wider screens, which is switched out in favour of a three-initial monogram better suited to the smallest screens.
- Web hosting. Not surprisingly, the site is hosted on a DECEMBER14 web server.
