If you’re going to write to me about the possibility of building a website for you, it will help me to understand your needs and make a better reply to you if you will give me as much information as you can. I’ve set out below some things to think about.
Tell me a little about your business or organisation:
Tell me about your needs and wishes. Here are some pointers to get you started:
Do you think you will need help preparing the text for your website?
Do you think you will need a content management system (CMS)? (CMSs allow website owners to update their sites themselves.) If your website is likely to need the text updated only very rarely, a CMS may be an unnecessary investment in time and money — there are other options.
Do you already have a domain, or will you want me to register one for you? If the latter, do you have a preferred domain name in mind?
Would you like me to arrange hosting for your website? If you already have hosting arranged, with whom?
What is your timescale for the project? Do you have a target launch date in mind for the website?
Timescale and budget both affect what I can do for you, and short timescales cost more to pull off. So please try to be as accurate and realistic as possible in your answers. Without this basic information, I might waste your time by making a proposal that neither meets your needs nor suits your budget. Which brings me to…
What budget do you have available for the project?
Really, I don’t ask about your budget because I want to spend it all. I simply need to be able to assess if what you want from the project can be realised for no more than you expect to spend.
